The Story of Whitestone Ceramics
Welcome to Whitestone Ceramics! I’m Kate and I make functional and decorative, wheel-thrown stoneware designed to bring comfort and beauty into your daily routines.
My work is an invitation to explore colour, texture, form, and pattern. Lately, I have fallen in love with contrast. I leave parts of the clay raw and unglazed so you can feel the earthy warmth of the stoneware right against the smooth, colourful glaze.
This creative journey is a heartfelt homecoming for me. After a 38-year break, I finally stepped back to the wheel. I picked up right where I left off as a 19-year-old student studying A-Level design. From 2019, I rediscovered my passion alongside a wonderful community in a local studio. Then, in the summer of 2024, I brought my dream completely home by building my very own studio space in my garden.
Today, Whitestone Ceramics is born from that quiet garden sanctuary. Every mug, jug, bowl, and vase is handmade with care, bridging my early passion for design with the colourful, textured pieces I create for your home today.
Sustainability
At the heart of my studio practice is a deep commitment to environmental awareness and zero-waste. Every creation begins with the understanding that earth’s resources are finite, which is why 100% of my unfired clay is meticulously reclaimed and recycled back into workable material. Water, used in the throwing process, is treated with equal respect. By capturing, settling, and reusing all the water from my pottery wheel, I have established a closed-loop production system that significantly reduces my environmental footprint and ensures that no usable material goes to waste. I rely entirely on harvested rainwater from my water butt to wash down studio surfaces, adding this to my garden borders.
This circular philosophy extends from the studio floor to the final delivery at your doorstep. When sending my ceramics into the world, the journey remains entirely eco-conscious. Every piece is wrapped in packaging that can be fully processed in standard paper recycling, while the protective packing peanuts are completely compostable.
